Ureilite - Primitive achondrite meteorite, olivine-rich, from Sahara (Ouargla region), complete piece, 2.8 g.
Description from the seller
The ureilite is a rare type of stony meteorite with a unique mineralogical composition that is very different from other stony meteorites. This dark gray or brown-colored meteorite is named after the village of Novy Urey, in the Republic of Mordovia, Russia, where a meteorite of this type fell on September 4, 1886. Ureilites are classified as primitive achondrite meteorites, which are a very rare and scarce subgroup within meteorites.
The anecdote tells how some farm workers saw the meteorite fall, collected it, crushed it, and ate some fragments. Interestingly, ureilites are known for being the hardest meteorites in the world because they contain small diamonds inside, which makes them almost impossible to cut, even when using diamond wire for such work.
They are composed of olivine (50-75%) and pyroxene (14-35%), with very small amounts of Fe and Ni metals. Among the crystals of these minerals, in the matrix, noble gases and carbon are found (sometimes in the form of diamond, which is an indicator of high pressures). The presence of diamonds has been interpreted as the result of the metamorphism of graphite.
An opportunity to add this marvel of the universe to your collection. Recently found in Ouargla (Algeria) in 2025 and currently undergoing official classification. Some light areas can be seen, representing the caliche adhered to the site where it was found. It is of excellent size for this type of meteorite.
All our meteorites come with an IMCA (International Meteorite Collectors Association) certificate, ensuring the authenticity of all our meteorites for life. Buy with confidence.
Greetings and our best wishes.
