Brian Donnelly, aka Kaws, is an American artist and designer born in 1974 in New Jersey, USA. A street artist, painter, illustrator, sculptor, and publisher, Kaws is an insatiable and inspired jack-of-all-trades, known for his connection to the world of pop art.
After graduating with a degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1996, he worked for a time as a freelancer for Disney. Today he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Kaws began his career in the 1990s with street art. He superimposed his works onto advertising panels in bus shelters and phone booths in Brooklyn. He created or reused well-known comic book and cartoon characters, reinterpreting them through his offbeat lens. The Michelin Man, the Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, SpongeBob SquarePants... these iconic characters, deeply rooted in the collective imagination, allow the artist to adopt a universal language.
Because Kaws's primary goal is to make art accessible to everyone! Very quickly, he began to sign all his creations with a very distinctive trademark: he replaced the eyes of his characters with crosses. This made his style all the more recognizable. Kaws drew inspiration from the foundations of pop art, but also from artists like Gerhard Richter, Claes Oldenburg, and Chuck Close.
As his career developed, he mastered various techniques and expanded his artistic output to include sculpture and painting on canvas. His desire to work in three dimensions stemmed from a quest for ever-greater mastery of space and reality. His sculptures can indeed reach monumental proportions. Some of his giant figures are now displayed at museum entrances and never fail to attract the attention of passersby.
Now recognized on the international scene, he works for major brands - such as Nike for whom he will design a pair of sneakers, Vans, DC Shoes and Uniqlo - but also for the music and film industry, collaborating with Kanye West, Tim Burton, Pharrell Williams and many others.
Kaws has exhibited his work in the most famous galleries and museums around the world. His works are notably part of three major permanent collections: the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego.
In 2024, the artist KAWS made a splash with major collaborations and exhibitions. He launched the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon "Companion" with Audemars Piguet and an exclusive collection in partnership with UNIQLO x Andy Warhol. His works were also exhibited at the Andy Warhol Museum and the Louis Vuitton Foundation, in leading contemporary art exhibitions.
In 2025, KAWS will present his new solo exhibition, "KAWS: FAMILY," at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville (opening March 15). This highly anticipated exhibition will highlight KAWS's iconic works—drawings, paintings, sculptures, and artistic collaborations—exploring human emotions and family bonds. A must-see for contemporary art enthusiasts.
