- Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent figures of the Vienna Secession movement. Renowned for his richly ornamental style and his exploration of sensuality, beauty, and the female form, Klimt revolutionized European modern art at the turn of the 20th century. His works combine influences from Byzantine mosaics, Japanese prints, and classical mythology, creating a unique synthesis of pattern, gold, and emotion.
Klimt's paintings are among the most valuable in the art market. His masterpiece Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I sold for $135 million in 2006, making it one of the most expensive paintings ever sold. Other major works have also achieved record-breaking prices at international auctions, cementing his legacy as a central figure in modern art.
One of his most elegant portraits, Portrait of Emilie Louise Flöge (1902), depicts the artist’s lifelong companion and muse. Dressed in a flowing blue gown adorned with intricate geometric patterns and gold accents, Emilie stands poised against a subdued background, her confident gaze embodying the essence of the Viennese avant-garde. The work perfectly exemplifies Klimt’s “Golden Period” style where ornamental abstraction, color harmony, and psychological depth merge into timeless beauty.
