Folklore, Myths and Legends of Britain is a richly illustrated compendium exploring the country’s traditional tales, supernatural lore, and cultural myths. Covering everything from Celtic legends and medieval folklore to regional ghost stories and ancient customs, this monumental volume blends historical commentary with storytelling. Lavishly produced and extensively indexed, it remains one of the most comprehensive works on Britain’s folkloric heritage.
Key tales and figures often have strong regional ties, such as the Arthurian legends in Wales and the West Country, and the outlaw stories of Robin Hood in Nottinghamshire.
Key Myths and Legends:
King Arthur
Robin Hood
Beowulf
The Loch Ness Monster (Nessie)
The Green Man
Mythical Creatures and Beings:
Boggarts and Brownies
Kelpies and Selkies
Black Shuck and Gwyllgi
Giants
Some Regional Traditions:
Wales: The Mabinogion.
Scotland: Nessie, witches, fairies (fae), and legendary figures like Robert the Bruce.
Northern Ireland Legends here often revolve around great Celtic heroes such as Cú Chulainnand Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool).
The creation of this impressive tome was overseen by Russell Ash, and was very much a team effort. Contributions came from a considerable number of eminent academics and specialists in folklore and related disciplines, with a wealth of striking original illustrations, often possessing the look of contemporary woodcuts, undertaken by a team of talented artists. Amongst the latter was the illustrator Eric Fraser, who created some classical pen and ink illustrations such as those of Herne the Hunter, Lady Godiva, and ‘The Wicked Lady’.
Condition: Scarce title in very good to fine condition. No dustwrapper.
