Artist biography
Francesc Tarrés was a Catalan painter renowned for his still life work and for a luminous sensibility that defined much of his oeuvre. He was born in Blanes in 1928 into a family involved in maritime trade. His early inclination for drawing led him to study at the School of Fine Arts in Olot, where he was a student of Josep Berga i Boix, and later, he attended classes at the Llotja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.
During the 1950s, Tarrés settled in Barcelona and actively participated in the artistic circles of the Eixample district. His early works showed a clear influence of Noucentisme, but from the 1960s onward, he evolved toward a personal style in which light and composition took center stage. His still-life paintings, characterized by chromatic restraint and formal balance, became his hallmark.
Although he also painted landscapes, it was in interiors and still lifes that he achieved his best results. In these works, the arrangement of fruits, everyday objects, or flowers reveals a keen eye for the quiet harmony of simplicity. His works were presented in numerous group exhibitions in Girona, Barcelona, and Figueres, as well as in several solo shows beginning in 1972.
Towards the end of his career, Tarrés combined teaching with painting, giving private lessons in his studio on Provença Street. He died in Barcelona in 2004, leaving behind a remarkable body of work that is now mainly held in private Catalan collections.
