AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Rare oil on mahogany panel by Victor VIGNON (Villers-Cotterêts 1847- Meulan 1909), signed lower left; traces of labels on the back

Born in 1847, Victor Vignon was a student of the greatest French naturalist, Camille Corot. Like his master, he was an outdoor painter. Still relatively unknown to the general public, Victor Vignon was nonetheless a full-fledged member of the Impressionist movement, of which he can be considered an early herald. From 1870 onward, he painted lush landscapes of the Île-de-France. Alongside Paul Cézanne, Armand Guillaumin, Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro, Vignon worked in Auvers-sur-Oise from 1874 to 1876. He participated in the last four Impressionist exhibitions and received numerous endorsements, notably from Auguste Renoir, who recommended him to Durand-Ruel, and Théo Van Gogh, who purchased his painting 'Young Girl in the Vines' in 1883.
The Musée d'Orsay has several works by the painter.
