Description from the seller
Spectacular artwork created in watercolor and gouache by the brilliant artist Alex Diggelmann, Switzerland 1902-1987. Diggelmann was an instructor, aeronaut, ballester, and one of the most well-known graphic and poster artists in Switzerland. After three years as a primary school teacher, he began training as a drawing instructor. He attended the vocational school in Bern, the Julian Academy in Paris, and the Academy of Art of the Book and Graphic Art in Leipzig. Returning to Switzerland, Diggelmann worked as an independent graphic artist in Zurich and, from 1938, as a high school teacher at the cantonal secondary school. During World War II, he became famous for his Red Cross posters. For the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, he designed the official poster and two of the four official Olympic stamps. After World War II, he designed the UEFA Cup for the Union of European Football Associations and also the medals for the World Ski Championships, which are still awarded with his design. Mainly during his travels across various countries in Western and Southern Europe, he painted landscapes in watercolor. He also created murals and book illustrations.
Diggelmann is one of only two artists to have won three medals at the Olympic Art Competitions. The other was the writer Josef Petersen, who won three silver medals.
The artwork is in very good condition and is sold with the original frame from the period. The artwork alone, without the frame, measures 46x33 cm. It belonged to a Swiss-origin family based in southern Spain for decades. It is shipped well-packaged by an international company.
