【Product details】

This impressive life-size 20th century full suit of samurai armour exemplifies the refinement and dignity of high-ranking warriors of the era. The set features a iron cuirass (nimai-dō gusoku) adorned with auspicious motifs and family emblems, combining both martial strength and aesthetic splendour.

The iron helmet (sanjūkken suji-bachi kabuto) is composed of thirty riveted plates, meticulously joined to form a robust bowl. The large pair of kuwagata (antler-shaped crests) mounted on the front creates a commanding silhouette. The fukigaeshi (turnbacks) are fitted with chrysanthemum ornaments, a symbol of longevity and imperial authority in Japan.

The ressei-style menpō (half mask) presents a fierce expression with a moustache under the nose and a red interior, complete with yodarekake (throat guard). The cuirass displays in maki-e the Ken-katabami crest—an emblem associated with martial virtue (shōbu, meaning “honouring the way of the warrior”) and family prosperity. The combination of gold and black creates a striking contrast emblematic of samurai prestige.

The haidate (thigh guards) are embroidered with the kikkō ni kiku motif—hexagonal turtle-shell patterns with chrysanthemum designs—representing longevity and auspicious fortune. The suneate (shin guards) feature articulated iron splints with kikkō metal mesh reinforcement at the knees, while the kote (arm guards) are made from chainmail and iron plates sewn over patterned brocade fabric.

The armour retains its original wooden storage chest (yoroi-bitsu), marked with characters on the front, designed for safe storage and ceremonial display.

Condition: The armour bears a dignified patina from age, with areas of surface wear, minor rust on iron parts, and small chips/scratches to the surface. The brocade fabrics on the kote, haidate, and suneate show discolouration, fraying, stains, and some tears consistent with age. These traces of use and time attest to its authenticity as a genuine antique of the Edo period. Please review the detailed photographs for a complete view of its condition.

The display stand is not included.
