【Product details】
This elegant portfolio was published in 1955 by The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints (アダチ版画研究所), Tokyo, under the supervision of Toyohisa Adachi. Entitled “Selected Masterpieces of Ukiyo-e Prints” (浮世絵版画撰集), it presents finely produced reprints of landmark works from the Edo period, selected from museum collections such as the Tokyo National Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The set was edited by Ichitarō Kondō, with English translations by Shigetaka Kaneko.
This portfolio contains twenty-four prints (originally twenty-five), with No. 7 missing. Each print is mounted on a numbered paper frame (not removable) and accompanied by a corresponding envelope. Two of the prints are very long and come folded as issued.
Among the included works, prints No. 14, 15, and 16 employ kirazuri (mica printing), adding a refined shimmer to the surface. The prints are faithfully reproduced in traditional woodblock technique (nishiki-e), using colour separation and hand-printing by Adachi’s skilled artisans.
The artists represented include many of Japan’s most celebrated masters: Hishikawa Moronobu, Torii Kiyonobu, Kaigetsudo Doshin, Ishikawa Toyonobu, Suzuki Harunobu, Suzuki Harushige (Shiba Kokan), Isoda Koryūsai, Katsukawa Shuncho, Toshūsai Sharaku, Kitagawa Utamaro, Chōbunsai Eishi, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Toyokuni, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Andō Hiroshige, and others. Each work is accompanied by bilingual (Japanese and English) commentary sheets providing historical and stylistic notes.
Most of the prints are in very good condition. A few prints have noticeable foxing (see photos), and one print shows slight waviness along the edge. Some of the paper frames and commentary sheets show foxing. The hard case has fading and minor stains. Overall, in good to very good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details of the condition.
