【Product details】

This is a Showa period Noh mask representing Fukai, hand-carved from wood and finished with traditional gofun, a white pigment made from finely crushed oyster shell. Fukai portrays the face of a middle-aged woman. The name “Fukai” reflects the emotional depth of a woman who has endured the hardships of life, especially the sorrow of a mother who has lost her child. This depth is expressed through the slightly downcast eyes, the soft mouth shape reminiscent of the Zo-onna character, and the shallow, dimple-like wrinkles around the cheeks.

The mask shows natural ageing, which enhances its contemplative presence.

Age-related wear is visible, including abrasions, flaking and cracking of the surface coating, colour changes, grime and general surface rubbing. The tie cord is missing.

Please refer to the photos for a full assessment of the condition.

Dimensions: approx. H 20.3 cm W 13.6 cm D 7.1 cm
