Original edition of Thucydide, fils d'Olorus, translated from Greek by Pierre-Charles Levesque, in a four-volume half-leather binding from 1795.
Description from the seller
Original edition of this estimated translation of Thucydides by the historian and professor Pierre-Charles Levesque (1736-1812).
Levesque, a historian of Russia and France, finds vital lessons for France in the ancient source. He translated Xenophon and Plutarch for the collection of ancient moralists, and his main literary achievement is a good translation of Thucydides.
Lacking the antique portrait bust of the author on the frontispiece.
A period-bound volume, in deep green half-leather with corner panels, smooth spine richly decorated with small gold tools, fillets, fleurons, and gilded initials, with speckled edges. Beautiful engraved bands, printed on laid paper.
Pages showing some white spots, rubbed spine and cuts. Interior clean and fresh, with few foxing; moisture at the hinge on pages 55-58 (Volume I); interior clean and fresh, with few foxing. Good copy.
This story unfolds over 8 books, with the following contents: Books I-II. First excursion: On an ancient engraved stone depicting the bust of a statue by Phidias. Books III-IV. Second excursion: On the northern origin of the Greeks, proven by the primitive identity of their language with one of the oldest northern languages. Books V-VI. Third excursion: On the northern origin of the Greeks, demonstrated by some of their opinions and religious practices. Books VII-VIII. Fourth excursion: On Thucydides' orthography. Fifth excursion: On the judgment that Diodorus of Halicarnassus rendered of Thucydides.
