Description from the seller
Glossarium ad scriptores mediae et infimae latinitatis. editio nova locupletior et auctior, opera et studio monachorum ordinis S. Benedicti e congregatione sancti Mauri.SUB OLIVA CAROLO OSMONT (PARISIIS), PARIS, 1733. Voll. I - VI. Follows: the 4 volumes of the "Supplementum". 10 folio volumes, pp. XC+741; 852; 839; 710; 781; 907; 628; 868; 618; 336 + 124 + 77.
This is the last enlarged edition of the Glossarium by Charles de Fresne, Lord of Cange (DU CANGE). The first edition in three volumes appeared in 1678, but was progressively expanded until reaching the present ten-volume edition, printed in folio and preserved in excellent condition.
The first 6 volumes (A-Z) were edited on the basis of the first 3-volume edition, now with new entries and meanings introduced by the Benedictines and published in Paris between 1733 and 1736.
In 1766 the next four volumes appeared, also in Paris, as a supplement, of which the first three complete the letters A-Z and the fourth is a reverse French-Latin dictionary, very valuable for the study of the documentation of classical French and its literature.
These 10 volumes therefore constitute the most complete edition of Du Cange's Glossarium.
Du Cange's Glossarium remains the most comprehensive medieval Latin dictionary in existence.
many plates outside the text, engraved in copper, full page
Contemporary brown parchment bindings with gold titles and decorations on the spines. Some spines have some wear or abrasions, but overall a very good work.
