Description from the seller
Second collective edition of Flaubert's works published in 1885, partly original, and complete in eight volumes in octavo.
Adorned with a beautiful portrait of the author in the frontispiece, engraved by H. Toussaint after Commanville.
Preserved in half-ochre chagrin bindings, with spines with raised bands decorated with title and volume number pieces in green leather, gilt lettering. Overall in very good condition. Wear to the covers, headbands, and edges. Slight shading on the spine. Interior fresh and clean, with some scattered foxing without severity, quite rare.
A fine example.
Besides the works that had already been published (Madame Bovary, Bouvard and Pécuchet, La Tentation de Saint-Antoine, L'Education Sentimentale) and a volume for theatre, this edition includes the study on Flaubert by Maupassant placed before Bouvard and Pécuchet, as well as some unpublished texts after the Mélanges: Par les champs et par les grèves, La danse des morts, Novembre, Rabelais (a youth study), Smarh, A bord de la Cange (fragments of a journey in the Orient).
An alphabetical glossary is also found at the end of two volumes, along with the requisition trial after the publication of Madame Bovary.
