Table clock and packaging, ebony wood / maple veneer / glass / metal / mechanical components, designed by Michael Graves, USA, 1986, produced by Alessi, Italy, 1988. The table clock consists of a maple veneer base supporting four ebony columns and...

Graves by Alessi
The American architect and designer Michael Graves (born 1934, Indianapolis, USA) developed this 'fireplace clock' in 1986 for the leading Italian design company, Alessi. Launched in 1988, it was acclaimed for its postmodern interpretation of classic design, featuring four ebony columns in a Tuscan style supporting a square pediment and the clock face.
Graves commented on the project in 1988: 'In designing the desk clock, I was interested in exploring the established tradition of viewing artifacts as miniature architectures. There are countless examples where furniture and artifacts are placed within interiors as idealized objects that derive their primary cues from proportional architectural systems. I have always been interested in the ambiguity that arises between these hints for 'internal buildings' and their external precedents.' (Alessi: the design factory, Edizioni Accademia, 1998, p93)
It is shipped with careful packaging included in the shipping cost.
