Fulgenzio Micanzio's Vita del padre Paolo dell ordine de servi e theologo della serenissima republ. de Venetia, first edition (1646), Italian, 300 pages, original language, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare original edition of the biography of Paolo Sarpi by Fulgenzio Micanzio (1570-1654), published in 1646 and placed on the Index of Prohibited Books by decree on June 10, 1659.
Preserved in a beautiful full vellum binding with covers, the smooth spine decorated with the handwritten title, blue speckled edges. Engraved title vignette.
In very good condition. Solid and clean binding, slightly rubbed corners. Interior fresh and clean, without foxing or stains, paper very white.
In 1600, Mircanzio was invited to Venice by Paolo Sarpi as a secretary. With Sarpi, he wrote in 1606 against the Carmelite Giovanni Antonio Bovio (Bovius), who contributed to the papal side of the debate on the Venetian Interdict.
Micanzio, as Sarpi's biographer, makes some claims in his favor: that he helped Galileo with his first telescope; and that Girolamo Fabrizi d'Acquapendente did not credit Sarpi with the merit of his work on venous valves. Later, Micanzio proves useful to Galileo by investigating and overcoming the problems related to the printing of his works.
Provenance: Bookplate at the front cover of Georges d'Aubusson de La Feuillade (1609–1697), archbishop of Embrun and later bishop of Metz.
Fulgenzio Micanzio
Life of Father Paolo of the Order of the Servants and theologian of the Most Serene Republic of Venice.
1646, in Leiden, s.e.
in-12 (13 x 7.5 cm), 300 pages + 4 pages of flyleaves
