Florence, Medicea Laurenziana Library
Specimen number: XLII
14th Century
Limited edition
Hand gold leaf application
Hand-treated parchment paper
Connection made manually

Leather cover with blind embossing and studs.
Precious 14th-century code of the Divine Comedy, with miniatures and annotations by medieval readers.
The manuscript transmits the entire Comedy, followed by texts by Jacopo della Lana, Bosone da Gubbio, and Jacopo Alighieri, with a poem attributed to Boccaccio. Copied by one of the scribes of the 'Danti del Cento,' it contains numerous marginal notes in Latin and vernacular from threeteenth-century hands, which demonstrate the early readers' interest in the poem.
The decoration includes figured initials and 49 miniature scenes in the margins, an authentic visual commentary on the text up to the end of Purgatory. The miniatures on the initial cards of the three canticas are attributed to Pacino di Buonaguida, one of the leading Florentine miniaturists of the Trecento.
At the beginning of the manuscript, there is a coat of arms, partly worn, perhaps belonging to the Bugliaffi family. Part of the original leather binding with blind impressions is preserved.
The code belonged to Senator Carlo Strozzi and entered the library in 1785 along with other valuable volumes from his collection.
A work of great historical and artistic charm, combining Dante's poetry with the Florentine miniatures of the 14th century.
Complete set with box and commentary.
