Vertumne et Pomone, an eighteenth‑century Flemish drawing in brown wash over black crayon lines on blue‑gray paper, 41 × 26.5 cm, from Belgium.
Description from the seller
Vertumnus and Pomona – Brown wash on black crayon strokes, Flemish School of the 18th century
Beautiful mythological scene depicting Vertumne and Pomone, executed in brown wash over black pencil lines on blue-gray paper.
This subject, taken from the Ovidian tradition, illustrates the moment when Vertumnus, god of seasons and gardens, approaches the nymph Pomona to win her over. The composition, typical of the Flemish School of the 18th century, highlights a fluid drawing, elegant drapery, and delicately rendered chiaroscuro.
The figures, slender and graceful, stand out against a wooded landscape rendered with beautiful atmospheric sensitivity. The fine, subtly modulated brown wash reveals a skilled handling of modeling and volumes, while the blue-gray paper support, highly appreciated in Northern Europe in the 18th century, adds a particular depth and luminosity to the overall composition.
Condition: work in good condition with minor wear. Signs of alterations consistent with age.
Displayed under glass in a 19th-century gold frame (visible accidents and chips).
Technique: brown wash over black pencil strokes, on blue-gray paper.
School: Flemish, 18th century.
Visible dimensions: 41 × 26.5 cm (16.1 × 10.4 in). (excluding the frame)
A rare and charming work, emblematic of 18th-century North European mythological aesthetics, ideal for a collector of old drawings or an Ovidian subject enthusiast.
