Description from the seller
Antique flip-top chest of drawers/desk (secretaire) in Empire/Biedermeier style (1800-1835)
Refined antique furniture, authentic, dating between 1800 and 1835. It combines the elegance of the Empire Style with the sobriety of Biedermeier, characterized by clean lines and the natural beauty of wood essences.
Main Features
Type: Dresser with three drawers, the first with a flip-top that transforms into a writing desk surface.
Materials: Veneering (thick veneer) in walnut burl and solid walnut on an internal spruce structure. Hardware and corner decorations in chased bronze (or brass), with a functioning latch key for the lid closure.
Style/Era: Empire/Biedermeier, Italian or Central European manufactory of the early nineteenth century.
Construction: handcrafted assembly with dovetail joints, without the use of modern nails or screws.
Advantages
Authenticity and Originality: An authentic historical piece, not a reproduction.
Wood quality: exceptional grain of walnut and burl, arranged in a 'bookmatched' pattern, creating a strong aesthetic impact.
Structural solidity: despite its age, the solid wood construction and traditional joints ensure robustness.
Defects and Wear
The original finish (wax/shellac) is dulled, with signs of wear and surface halos, requiring conservative restoration to bring it back to its original splendor.
Interior: The internal surfaces of the drawers and the back show stains, abrasions, and dark marks caused by prolonged use and humidity over the centuries.
Signs of age: normal scratches and wear on the edges and surface, indicating the history of the furniture.
Dimensions
Missing the key to close the last drawer at the bottom.
Height: 96 cm
Width: 119 cm
Depth: 62 cm
Approximate weight 60/70 kg
