Description from the seller

Title

Japan – Meiji Period Suzuribako (Writing Box) – Gold Makie (金蒔絵) on Nashiji Ground – Phoenix (鳳凰図) Design – Complete Calligraphy Set

Description

Exquisite Meiji Period Suzuribako (硯箱) with Phoenix Design in Gold Makie (金蒔絵) and Nashiji (梨子地) Finish – Complete Calligraphy Tools

A magnificent Japanese Suzuribako (writing box) from the Meiji Period (late 19th – early 20th century), showcasing the refined elegance of traditional Urushi (漆) craftsmanship.
The box is decorated with an opulent Gold Makie (gold lacquer) phoenix motif (鳳凰図) symbolizing auspicious fortune and eternal beauty. The contrast between the shimmering gold and the subtle Nashiji (梨子地, sprinkled gold background) creates a rich, radiant surface typical of the finest Meiji lacquerware.

Artistic & Historical Features
• Period: Meiji era (c. 1868–1912), representing the golden age of Japanese lacquer artistry.
• Interior: The inner surface displays luxurious Nashiji and Kin-sunago (gold flakes) decoration, creating a dynamic, tiger-like pattern effect.
• Condition: Remarkably well-preserved for its age. The lacquer retains deep gloss, and the Makie patterns remain vivid and intact.

Complete Calligraphy Set (文房四宝, Bunbō Shihō)

The box includes traditional Japanese writing tools, beautifully arranged within.
• Inkstone (硯 – Suzuri): Central stone plate surrounded by a metal frame.
• Water dropper (水滴 – Suiteki): Round lidded vessel used to drip water onto the inkstone, decorated in green and gold.
• Ink sticks (墨 – Sumi): Two included, one black with colorful decoration and one red, both with high decorative value.
• Divider tray (中板 – Naka-ita): Removable inner plate for tool organization.
(Note: The brush and paperweight are not confirmed from the photos.)
