Fratris Hieronymi Savonarolae orationes expositiones in psalmos by Girolamo Savonarola, a rare 1514 Venetian edition bound in full brown leather, with 47 pages.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Vintage-style binding in full brown leather with a filetto, corner pieces, and a central rosette impressed dry on the covers, with traces of title on the spine.

3 white cards, 47, 4 white cards

Rarest Venetian edition of the works among the most famous of Savonarola. Some of these writings were composed in prison, notably the commentary on the Miserere written in the Alberghetto prison where he was taken after the famous arrest on Palm Sunday of 1498, following his confession of heresy under torture. He also wrote the commentary on Psalm 31 while in prison.

On the frontispiece, title, and a delightful silography depicting the author captured in his cell while writing; on the back of page 47, a large and beautiful typographic mark in silography by Bindoni, depicting Justice seated on a throne between two lions; on the back of the last, a white geometric pen drawing; inside, magnificent Gothic-style initial letters. The copy is in good conservation condition, notably quite fresh and well-inked internally, with good margins, some traces of dirt, a tiny nibble at the upper corner of the frontispiece which bears an old ownership note; the binding is modest, remade especially at the spine and with old but coarse endpapers.
