Luxurious edition of 'The Knight of Touches' by Barbey d'Aurevilly, illustrated by the French painter and decorator André Mare (1887-1932) with very numerous lithographs.

Limited to a small number, 120 copies all on Arches vellum, this one printed for Monsieur Alexis Lazarus and signed (no. 4). Enriched at the end of the volume with a lithograph signed by André Mare depicting Barbey d'Aurevilly, with the dinner presentation menu on the adjacent page.

Preserved in a luxurious binding signed by J-F. Barbance, in half-prune morocco with corner pieces, spine richly decorated with gilded panels adorned with small tools, fillets, and a title in gilded letters. Gilded head. Covers and spine preserved.
In very good condition. Light rubbing on the corners, decorative binding with luminous gilding. Interior fresh and clean despite some foxing on the edges and in the margins of some pages.
A fine example.

Edition carried out 'at the expense of the Hippocrate society and its friends' under the direction of collector and publisher Manuel Bruker, in the words of Pierre Mac Orlan, a 'connoisseur of fine books.' As early as 1926, he established his own publishing house on the advice of his friend Dr. Lucien-Graux, 'the prince of bibliophiles.' Nearly eighty illustrated works with engravings were published as part of an ambitious editorial program: The great styles of modern books established by the art publisher Manuel Bruker.


Le Chevalier Des Touches is a novel by Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, published in 1864, inspired by the life of Jacques Destouches, the hero of the chouannerie.
