Description from the seller
Bible Historiée - French MS 5
Preserved at Manchester, John Rylands Library
Section 13
48 cards
Sample number: IL
Magnificent example of a medieval illustrated Bible, enriched with a complete cycle of full-page miniatures created with gold leaf and precious pigments. The scenes depict key episodes from Genesis and Exodus, such as the Creation, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel, with a refined style rich in iconographic details.
The manuscript, produced in northeastern France or Flanders at the beginning of the 13th century, represents a rare example of the so-called 'illustrated Bible': a type in which images become the main protagonists, with a narrative elegance that makes the presence of long written texts unnecessary.
The miniatures follow an iconographic scheme of great visual coherence and are accompanied by descriptive inscriptions, harmoniously integrated, which reinforce the symbolic reading of the sacred scenes.
This code, known as MS 5 (Rylands), stands out for its balance between spirituality and art, and for its function as an object of high representation. A work intended for a client of great taste and culture, which retains its charm and aesthetic value intact even after centuries.
Complete set with box and commentary.
