A central figure of the CoBrA movement, Appel brought a raw, emotional intensity to his work, using vibrant colour and spontaneous, childlike forms to break away from traditional artistic restraints. His belief that painting should be an eruption of life—“an emotion full of truth,” as he famously said—is immediately felt in this dynamic composition.
