Artwork titled Das verletzte Kind - NO RESERVE, from the United Kingdom, 19th century, oil on canvas, depicting an interior domestic scene; sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Workshop by David Wilkie (1785–1841)
Title: Domestic Scene – "The Wounded Child"
Technique: oil on canvas
Dimensions: 48.5 × 39.5 cm (with frame), 40 × 30 cm (without frame)
Time of origin: probably early 19th century.
Description
The present painting depicts an intimate, narratively dense family scene in a bourgeois interior from the early 19th century. At the center, a child sits on a chair while the mother carefully examines and treats his hand. Other family members stand in the background, observing the process with concern and empathy.
The composition is carefully constructed: the child forms the emotional and visual focal point, flanked by the warm-toned figures of the adults. The brown-golden interior, with a fireplace, furniture, and textiles, creates a calm, homely atmosphere. The detailed depiction of gestures and facial expressions gives the scene an evocative narrative quality – a moment of everyday care, lovingly captured.
The theme, composition scheme, and color scheme clearly resemble David Wilkie's famous genre scene 'The Cut Finger' (circa 1809) as well as other of his well-known depictions of family interactions. The warm, subdued palette, the arrangement of the figures, and the finely observed details in the interior all demonstrate a close stylistic affinity with Wilkie's work.
artistic classification
The painting is attributed to the workshop of David Wilkie (1785–1841).
Wilkie was one of the central figures of British genre painting and shaped the entire genre of the early 19th century with his narrative, detailed scenes. His works, such as The Cut Finger, The Sick Child, or The Blind Fiddler, influenced many contemporaries who adopted or varied his themes and compositional structures.
Condition:
The painting is in age-appropriate good condition. The canvas shows a stable surface with slight patina. The frame has some age-related imperfections (see photos), but these do not detract from the overall impression. Overall, the work appears decorative and ready to hang.
Shipping note
Shipping is carried out insured, quickly, and carefully packed by a professional shipping service. The frame is included free of charge and is part of the delivery, but it does not constitute part of the artwork offered in a legal sense.
