Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876) is a famous Orientalist painter and a talented writer.
His only novel, Dominique, is considered a masterpiece of psychological novel, exploring the melancholy and passions of an impossible love.
The hero is a melancholic man who recalls his youth and his love for Madeleine, his cousin married to another. The story is a profound and delicate analysis of repressed feelings and resignation in the face of passion.
Berthold Mahn, the illustrator, was a French painter, draftsman, and illustrator recognized for his delicate watercolors and drawings that are part of a realistic and poetic tradition.
