AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

I present at auction a marvelous trilogy written by the German doctor Joannes Juncker (1679–1753), one of the leading educational architects of 18th-century German medicine, a man of the classroom, of the chair, of practice, who took the immense complexity of Georg Ernst Stahl's (1659–1734) thought and made it tangible, useful, and studyable in these three magnificent volumes.

Tomo 1 (Medicine): 'Overview of Theoretical and Practical Medicine, 138 Tables of All Primary Diseases by the Stahlian Method' (1734)

Volume 2 (Surgery): 'Overview of Surgery, both Medical, by the Stahlian Method…' (1731)

Tomo 3 (Chemistry and Pharmacy): 'Overview of Theoretical and Practical Chemistry in Tabular Form by Becheri and Stahlii...' (1730)

Look at those wonderful covers with dual-tone typography, red and black; that magnificent engraved portrait of the author that conveys the academic solemnity of Halle, the promise of an intellectual world that no longer exists. This trilogy is a door. And it is open. Can you imagine letting it close again?

These books are not dead objects: they breathe. They breathe the dense air of 18th-century classrooms, where medicine was still a battle between soul and matter; where Stahl argued that the body was not a machine, but a living mystery; where chemistry sought fire in matter and surgery was an act of almost sacred courage.

Every stain, every typographical mark, every carefully arranged table is a surviving heartbeat. These books have endured wars, plagues, empires, rains, changes of owner, country, and language. They have survived nearly three hundred years to reach you. Are you really going to let them slip away now... in your turn?

Think of the people who supported them before: doctors, philosophers, students who surely trembled before an exam, surgeons learning to cut to heal, chemists who still believed that fire was a universal principle. You would be their next custodian. Their next chapter.

Let them use your bookshelf, your studio, your imagination.
Let yourself be possessed by that aroma of old ink and vanished world.
Let yourself be fascinated by the tables, the titles, the spellings, the symbols.
Let yourself be swept away.
