Very rare edition in in-12 format of this important history of the reign of Henry IV, first published in 1605 in two volumes in quarto (same publisher).
The work is divided into 7 parts (7 books), and our copy is the first volume, comprising the first three books.
Opens with a beautifully engraved title.
Copy in modern binding, flamed Morocco leather, spine with raised bands decorated with gold title and roll tools. First joint cracked (floating board), browned pages, some foxing. Reasonable condition.
The account of Pierre Matthieu (1563-1621), humanist, poet, playwright, jurist, and historiographer of
ROI is all the more interesting because the author was initially close to the Ligueurs before rallying to Henri.
IV, until he became a close advisor and confidant. The passages on the necessity of reconciliation.
