Description from the seller

Pierre Loti's first title, here in a beautiful illustrated edition by Pierre Rousseau featuring delicate stencil colorings both within and outside the text (the frontispiece with gold highlights).

Limited to 1021 copies, ours is one of 961 on Rives vellum paper, numbered from 61 to 1021, bearing the No. 605.

Paperback, dust jacket, and illustrated cover.

Very beautiful example, in good condition. Some handling marks on the cover, impeccable interior, and vibrant illustration colors.

Pierre Loti's first novel, published anonymously in 1879. The book's theme is a love story set against the exotic backdrop of Turkey in 1876-1877, between a European naval officer and a young woman from a wealthy old man's harem, first in Salonica and then in Istanbul.
