Description from the seller
This authentic iron jitte (jitte) dates from the late Edo to early Meiji period (mid–19th century Japan). Traditionally carried by samurai-class police officers (doshin and okappiki), the jitte served as a defensive and arresting tool rather than a lethal weapon. Its sturdy iron shaft, side prong, and well-balanced weight allowed the user to parry blades, control opponents, and enforce law in a period of rapid political change.
This example shows the characteristic craftsmanship of the era—solid forged iron with natural aging, patina, and surface wear consistent with historical use. Such pieces were symbols of authority and remain a key item in the study of classical Japanese martial arts (kobujutsu).
A genuine artifact representing the transition from the shogunate to modern Japan, ideal for collectors of samurai arms, Edo-period police equipment, and antique Japanese weaponry.
