In 1841, Herculaneum and Pompeii were the subject of intensive archaeological excavations and scientific documentation, with significant publications about the findings appearing in that specific year.
Excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum, which began in the 18th century, were continued in the 19th century under the rule of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (later Italy after unification). At that time, the methods often focused more on retrieving valuable works of art than on systematically preserving and documenting the sites, which only became standard later. Nevertheless, interest in the ancient sites was very high.
Significant publication
The year 1841 was particularly marked by the publication of important volumes of the comprehensive book series 'Herculanum and Pompeii: Complete Collection of the Discoveries There, Some Still Unpublished Paintings, Mosaics, and Bronzes'.
The engravings and fold-out plates present in the existing books vividly demonstrate the highly developed culture of the two buried cities.
