Description from the seller
Mastodon's fossil tooth – Miocene (~20 million years ago) – Portugal
Exceptional mastodon fossil tooth (family Mammutidae), originating from Portugal and dated to the Miocene, approximately 20 million years ago. It is a well-preserved molar with the typical mastodontoid morphology, characterized by rounded and robust cusps, adapted for crushing hard vegetation.
The enamel appears dark, dense, and shiny, resulting from advanced fossilization, indicating excellent structural preservation. The masticatory surfaces are clearly visible, with natural wear consistent with an adult individual, allowing for a very clear anatomical reading of the tooth.
On the lower face, the fossilized root structure is observed, with a preserved central cavity, reinforcing the authenticity of the specimen and its scientific interest. The entire set is completely natural, with no restorations or reconstructions, preserving the original patina acquired over millions of years.
Miocene Portuguese mastodon fossils are particularly rare on the market, making this specimen a highly valuable piece for collectors, educational institutions, or paleontology investors. It is a direct testimony of the megafauna that inhabited the territory now known as Portugal during a very ancient phase of European geological history.
