Description from the seller
Mechanical brass candlestick – Rising socket system
France or England, mid-19th century (circa 1800-1850)
An elegant solid brass candlestick, representative of the technical research carried out in the 19th century to improve the art of domestic lighting. This model belongs to the prestigious family of candlesticks with a "rising socket," an ingenious device developed at the end of the 18th century and then perfected by master turners in the 19th century.
Its internal mechanism, still present and functional, allowed the candle to be gradually raised as it burned, ensuring a constant light and preventing the loss of the last fragments of wax. These mechanical examples, produced in limited numbers and often incomplete today, are highly sought after by collectors.
Features :
- Solid brass, expertly turned and shaped
- Spark plug lifting mechanism (original internal pusher)
- Refined workmanship, typical of French or English workshops
- Noble and authentic patina testifying to long use
State:
- The upper edge of the socket shows deterioration (deformation and visible crack).
- The seat is slightly irregular, giving a very slight tilt without compromising stability.
- Marks and traces of use consistent with a 19th century piece.
A rare collector's item, blending traditional aesthetics and mechanical innovation, perfect for enriching a collection of antique lighting objects or for complementing a historically inspired interior.
