Description from the seller

Very beautiful album consisting of 79 lithographs, including a frontispiece title, extracted from the magazine L'Artiste, featuring numerous portraits and reproductions of works presented at the salons of 1832, 1834, and 1835.

The engravings are printed on strong paper and created by Léon Noël or Frey, according to Deveria, Gavarni, H. Vernet, Grass, A. Bovy, Desmadryl, Robert Fleury, etc. Portraits of major personalities of the time, such as Baron Lagarde, Eugène Delacroix, Paul Delaroche, Sigalon, Léopold Robert, Mlle Juliette, Emile Deschamps, and others, as well as sculptures, costumes, and various scenes of life, can be found.

Bound in a lovely half-dark brown morocco binding, with two gold lines and a cold line along the covers, a spine with false bands decorated with cold and gold lines, and a title in gold lettering.
Solid binding, minor flaw on the spine, unglued back, and some scuffing. Corners are perforated. The first 20 pages show a large but clear water stain. For the rest, some are browned, others have scattered foxing. Overall, it remains in very good condition. A beautiful romantic work.

The review L’Artiste was launched on February 6, 1831, with the subtitle 'journal of literature and fine arts,' by Achille Ricourt (1797-1875), an actor from Lille, a great theater enthusiast, and close to Honoré de Balzac. Published carefully in a large in-quarto format, this review is illustrated with vignettes and wood-engraved culs-de-lampe — Tony Johannot executed the initial vignettes — as well as steel engravings and lithographs — the first plate delivered is signed Charlet, depicting Napoleon in 1814.

Provenance: Bookplate stamp of Gustave Teyras on the front page.
