Alexandre Joseph de Bassinet’s Histoire sacrée de l'Ancien Testament; Histoire sacrée du Nouveau Testament, an illustrated eight-volume French edition published 1804–1806 by Voysard.

Original edition of this important illustrated history of the Old and New Testament, followed by the life of Jesus Christ, complete in eight volumes; published from 1804 to 1806.
Rich iconography consisting of a frontispiece portrait in each volume, 588 engraved plates in copperplate by Voysard after the paintings of the great masters, and 6 fold-out maps (General map of the terrestrial and aquatic world, map of the situation of the terrestrial Paradise and the inhabited lands by the patriarchs, Voyage of the children of Israel from their departure from Egypt, two maps of the Holy Land, map of the countries where the apostles preached the Gospel).
Beautifully preserved in a half-chagrin chocolate binding with corner tips, double fillets along the covers and corners, the spine finely decorated with gold fillets and compartments adorned with small tools. Gilt head. Untrimmed copy, printed on fine laid paper.
In good condition. Spine uniformly sun-damaged, corners with holes, some marks and scuffs on the covers and edges. Interior in good condition, magnificent print run of the engravings, a few scattered foxmarks without severity.
Alexandre Joseph de Bassinet, born in Avignon on January 24, 1733, son of Pierre-Joseph-Hyacinthe, was admitted as a doctor of law from the University of Avignon on September 9, 1751. He was the grand vicar of Verdun. He died in Paris on November 16, 1813. He published numerous works, including a Panegyric of St. Louis in 1767, a translation from English of the Modern History of Russia in 6 volumes in 1802, and a Sacred History of the Old and New Testaments in 3 volumes in 1806.
