Description from the seller
This limited-edition lithograph titled "Butsumo Mandala" (仏母マンダラ) is a 1988 work by Japanese avant-garde artist Josaku Maeda (前田常作). Known for his unique fusion of abstract art and traditional Buddhist iconography, Maeda presents a meticulously balanced composition rich in spiritual symbolism. The mandala format—traditionally a spiritual diagram representing the universe—is reinterpreted through bold geometry and vivid, saturated colors.
The image features repeating meditative Buddha-like faces, encircled in lotus petals and flames, all arranged in concentric, symmetrical structures. The central area of the print includes a stylized lotus motif radiating outward, reinforcing the spiritual and contemplative nature of the work. Each figure appears serene yet intense, suggesting protection and wisdom. The repetition and precision of the forms highlight Maeda’s interest in both ritual and order.
This is print number 83 out of a limited edition of 90, hand-signed and dated by the artist in pencil at the lower right corner. The title is written in Japanese at the lower center. The print is in excellent condition and is printed on high-quality paper with deckled edges.
This work is a fine example of Maeda's mature period, where he explored the intersection of spiritual depth and formal abstraction. It would make a meaningful addition to any collection focused on Japanese modern art, Buddhist-themed art, or geometric abstraction.
Dimensions:
Sheet Size: H55 cm × W50 cm

About Josaku Maeda (前田常作)
Josaku Maeda was a pioneering Japanese painter, printmaker, and professor, celebrated for his spiritually infused artworks that bridge traditional Buddhist iconography with modern artistic expression. Born in Osaka, Japan, Maeda graduated from the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts (Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku), where he later served as a professor, nurturing generations of Japanese artists.
Throughout his career, Maeda was deeply inspired by the philosophical underpinnings of Buddhism, which he explored through the symbolic structures of mandalas, celestial maps, and religious figures. His works are distinguished by their intricate detail, vibrant use of color, and their ability to convey metaphysical themes in a visually compelling manner. He believed in expressing the "unseen truths" of the universe through symbolic forms, making his art both meditative and intellectually profound.
Maeda’s works have been exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, and he has been the recipient of several awards and honors. His unique ability to merge sacred themes with a contemporary aesthetic places him among the most respected figures in postwar Japanese art. Many of his pieces are housed in major museums and private collections, and his lithographs are particularly sought after for their technical precision and spiritual resonance.
