Description from the seller
Splendid icon depicting Saint Nicholas, created on a panel with a gold background, an exquisite example of the post-Byzantine iconographic tradition. The saint, portrayed in half-length, emerges against a luminous background with solemn and penetrating features: a high forehead, flowing beard, and an iconic gaze convey the image of an educated and inspired bishop. He wears episcopal vestments, with the pallium decorated with black crosses and a red robe with stylized folds, in keeping with the usual elegance of Eastern school icons.
In his left hand, he holds the Gospel, a symbol of faith and doctrine, while with his right hand he gives the blessing. The Greek inscriptions on either side of the face identify the subject as 'Ο Άγιος Νικόλαος,' Saint Nicholas, bishop of Mira, a beloved figure and protector of sailors.
The composition stands out for its chromatic harmony and the balance of the design, in which the gold background, subtly patinated by time, imparts a mystical light that envelops the entire scene. An artwork of strong spirituality and intense devotional presence, datable to the 20th century, it can be traced back to a workshop from the Russian-Balkan area.
A piece of remarkable charm, in excellent condition, capable of conveying the deep sacredness and quiet authority characteristic of traditional Orthodox iconography.
