Robert Frank about his photo
I always only knew exactly what I didn't want. That set my direction; the rest was intuition. When I came to America, I didn't want to follow the same path that most photographers took to earn their money – fashion photography. I felt there was another way. But to do that, I had to find my own style. Something that makes people say: That’s a photo by Robert Frank. That was my dream. I worked towards that. It was always important to me not to copy anyone in the process. However, if there was one person who influenced my work, it was Walker Evans. His most important lesson was to look directly and straightforwardly at things and to work without compromise.
We got along well. He liked me, so he tolerated me. But he wasn't really a nice guy. This photo – the view through the three doors to a window – is in my Canadian
A house in Mabou was built. I was fascinated by the shape of the window, and I felt I could add something to the mysterious overall mood. I see the three doors when I lie on my bed. Old houses possess a beauty that newer ones no longer have. They are cold.
I enjoy living in this house in Mabou. It is a peaceful place, nothing happens, no one disturbs.
