Description from the seller
This is a lithograph or commemorative illustrated postcard celebrating the implantation of the Portuguese Republic on October 5, 1910. The image is an example of republican propaganda from the period, with the later addition of a promotional header for the Brazilian commercial establishment BAR PAULISTA.
Image Details
Central Theme: The main image celebrates the founding of the Republic in Portugal. It features a female figure symbolizing the Republic, holding the new national flag in green and red, introduced after the revolution.
Visual Elements: Includes grapes and vineyards, which can symbolize wine production or Portugal's agricultural wealth. In the background, there are representations of caravels and rural scenes, referring to maritime history and traditional Portuguese life.
The medallion in the lower left corner shows the face of António de Oliveira Salazar, leader of the dictatorial regime of the Estado Novo (1933-1974), which governed Portugal decades after the establishment of the Republic. Its inclusion in a republican image is a remarkable historical juxtaposition.
The Overlaid Print: The overlay at the top identifies the place as 'BAR PAULISTA' in Santos, Brazil, on Avenida dos Bandeirantes, 94. This indicates that the original image was reused as promotional material by this bar. Aiming to advertise the establishment, the poster, during the transition from 1934 to 1935, wishes its customers and friends Happy Holidays.
Historical Context
The image reflects the symbolism and political fervor that surrounded Portugal's transition from monarchy to republic in 1910. The use of the flag and feminine allegories were common in the republican iconography of the time. The commercial record indicates a Portuguese-Brazilian connection, showing the Portuguese diaspora and the popularity of national themes in Brazil.
