Trubert / Original illustration on the theme of Gutenberg created for SPE (Société parisienne d'Editions). Signed and dated gouache from 1944 on colored paper. Fine quality of execution. Rare. In good condition. 50 x 32 cm
The artist is Jean Trubert (Paris, 1909 – 1983), a prolific and respected French comic strip artist, illustrator and scenarist.
Career: Trubert was active from the 1930s to the 1980s and worked for numerous well-known French magazines, including Tintin, Vaillant and Francs Jeux.
Scope of work: He is best known for comic series such as Le chevalier Printemps and the characters Mousse et Boule, and he also worked on the popular figure Bécassine in 1959.
Illustrator: In addition to comics he was a skilled illustrator, and this work is a fine example of that.
Theme: The drawing shows Johannes Gutenberg (ca. 1400–1468), the German inventor of movable-type printing in Europe. He stands as a symbol for the spread of knowledge and the birth of the modern publishing world. * Client: SPE (Société Parisienne d'Editions). This was an important French publisher specializing in comic stories and children's literature, founded in 1928.
