Qur'an - Ottoman C13th, author/illustrator Unknown, in Arabic, a single-page manuscript dating to circa 1290, 18 cm by 14.5 cm, in fair condition.
Description from the seller
This is an extremely rare and ancient manuscript page from a late C13th Ottoman Quran. It contains verses 74-80 of from Meccan chapter 11, Hud, which relate the conversation between the angels sent to destroy the people of Lot and Prophet Abraham, followed by the angels' arrival at Lot's home and the subsequent confrontation with his wicked people. The key themes of these verses are Abraham's ples to God on behalf of the people of Lot, and Lot's distress and confrontation with the people of Lot. The manuscript contains two decorative marginal Juz (verse divisions), marking the 75th and 80th verses of the chapter.
Written in Nashki script in black ink, the predominant script during the Mamluk period (1250-1517), it consists of 11 lines of scripture, between which is interlinear commentary in Persian. It is written on the thick linen paper typical of a time when vellum was being replaced. Unsurprisingly, the page is age stained and has some water damage towards the lower left margin. However, it is in remarkable condition for its age.
