Description from the seller
Endre Ady – Selected Poems
Illustrated by Álmos Jaschik
Budapest: Pallas, 1921
Rare posthumous illustrated edition.
Bound in geometric-patterned cloth. Red painted page ends.
A scarce and beautifully produced 1921 Pallas edition of Endre Ady’s selected poems — the first major collection published after the poet’s death (1919). The volume includes eight full-page Art Nouveau / Symbolist illustrations by Álmos Jaschik, each inspired by a specific Ady poem and reflecting a decorative style reminiscent of Edmund Dulac.
About the illustrator:
Álmos Jaschik (1885–1950) was a major Hungarian graphic artist, stage designer and educator. He designed several Hungarian banknotes (Pengő), created influential theatre sets and costume designs, and illustrated numerous books. A pioneer of experimental animation, he produced Hungary’s first animated film (1942–1944).
Provenance: Ex libris of Benő Zsoldos, noted researcher and historian of playing cards.
A mounted portrait photograph of the poet, Endre Ady, is affixed to the frontispiece leaf.
Condition: Good, collectable copy. Previous owner's ex libris. The pages are darkened with age. Otherwise a very clean, solid copy.
