【Product details】

This exquisite four-tier lacquer jubako bento box from the Showa period is beautifully decorated in maki-e lacquerwork on a black ground. The lid depicts a tranquil night scene with a full moon shining over cherry and pine trees, a flowing river, and a farmer carrying firewood across a bridge. The sides continue the elegant landscape, featuring cherry blossoms, pines, reeds, willows, flocks of cranes in flight, and others gathered gracefully by the water’s edge. Small pieces of gold leaf are scattered across the tree trunks, adding a delicate texture and luxurious brilliance.

Each motif carries symbolic meaning in Japanese art. Cherry blossoms represent the fleeting beauty of life, while pines symbolise longevity and steadfastness. Cranes are emblems of peace and long life, and willows evoke elegance and flexibility. The full moon symbolises enlightenment and calm contemplation, a motif often celebrated in classical Japanese aesthetics.

The interior is finished in rich vermilion lacquer, with nashiji (pear-skin ground) applied to the base of each tier.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

There are minor blemishes from age and use, including small chips on the edges and a few hairline cracks in the inner lacquer, but overall it remains in good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
