【Product details】

This elegant Wajima lacquer document box from the Showa/Heisei period period features a striking design of large rhododendron blossoms rendered in vibrant vermilion lacquer with gold accents. Rhododendrons traditionally symbolise beauty, positivity, and the arrival of good fortune. The leaves are finished with fine nashiji (a pear-skin effect), adding depth and texture to the composition.

The decoration is executed in maki-e, a traditional Japanese lacquer technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate motifs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a shimmering, pear-skin-like surface.

The box is signed on the underside and comes with its original wooden storage box, which bears the title, signature, and seal. Hozando was a well-regarded lacquer workshop in Wajima, known for producing high-grade Wajima lacquerware such as food bowls, jubako, trays, and writing boxes. Their pieces are appreciated for their durability, refined finishes and meticulous craftsmanship.

Wajima lacquerware is renowned for its exceptionally strong base layers and highly skilled finishing. The production process involves over 23 steps and more than 124 individual procedures, resulting in lacquerware that is both robust and beautifully refined. Every line of the decoration is delicately executed, reflecting the precision and artistry that define traditional Wajima craftsmanship.

The document box is in very good used condition with minimal wear. Please note that the lid of the wooden storage box is slightly warped. Please refer to the photos for details.
