【Product details】
This striking hand-carved wooden mask was created in the Showa period by Kajiwara Ichiryū, a recognised master mask-maker from Saga Prefecture. The mask is finished in glossy black lacquer with vermilion accents, while the eyes and teeth are decorated with gold leaf. The long hair is made from real horse mane, adding a dramatic presence when displayed on the wall.
Kajiwara Ichiryū (real name Kazuya) was born in 1942 in Kashima, Saga Prefecture. After graduating from the sculpture course at the Pacific Art School, he returned to his hometown to study mask-making under his father, the second-generation Ichiryū. He is celebrated as the third-generation master responsible for crafting the masks used in “Ukitate,” a traditional local festival performance. These masks, known as furi-udate or kagura masks, are integral to Shinto ritual dances and festivals in the region and are recognised as part of Saga's intangible cultural heritage.
A maker’s branding mark is present on the inner surface, and a hanging cord is attached. The original wooden plaque with title, signature, and seal is included.
Very good used condition with minimal wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
Dimensions (Excluding hair): approx. H 28 cm W 16 cm D 13.5 cm
