Description from the seller
Very special and almost never offered complete set (7 parts) of:
Is. An. Nijhoff – Memorable Events from the History of Gelderland
With unique origin: Library of the House of Representatives / States General (1839)
An extremely rare and historically very interesting series, assembled between 1830 and 1862, with original red half-leather bindings (6 volumes) and one volume in its original paper cover. Copies from the collection of the Dutch States General are seldom or never offered on the market.
Details & Provenance
All parts bear one or more stamps from the Library of the House of Representatives of the States General.
In the front part of part I, there is a beautiful handwritten annotation from the early 19th century.
States General, Second Chamber, October 24, 1839 – No. 25
This indicates the official registration in 1839 by the Dutch Parliament.
Provenance not only gives this set documentary weight but also makes it bibliographically unique: it is clearly a work that was part of the parliamentary knowledge and reference library in The Hague.
Compound
Part I – 1830
The condition of Gelderland in the first half of the fourteenth century
- With an original, large fold-out plate.
Part II – 1833
Reinald III and Eduard, Dukes of Gelre
With written-off stamp, House of Representatives.
Part III – 1839
Willem and Reinald IV, Dukes of Gelre
- Large fold-out picture (seals & charters).
Part IV – 1847
Arnold van Egmond, Duke of Gelre
Part V – 1851
The Burgundian Rule
Part VI, First Section – 1859
Karel van Egmond, Duke of Gelre
Part VI, Second Piece – 1862
Karel van Egmond – continuation
This part is in the original paper cover (as issued).
Condition
Parts 1 through 6: sturdy, original red half-leather bands with gold embossing; light signs of aging, but functional and attractive.
Original paper cover, with signs of wear appropriate for age.
The text pages are well preserved; marginal foxing as is usual with books from this period.
The set is complete, with the two original plates.
Rarity
Complete sets rarely appear on the market, let alone with this official parliamentary provenance.
Most collections possess loose parts; a complete and consistent parliamentary copy is a rarity for collectors of Dutch history, bibliography, and Gelderland studies.
Provenance makes this a work that is also of museum interest.
In summary
A unique opportunity to acquire a complete, early 19th-century, substantively high-quality reference work, with an exceptional and rarely offered provenance: the House of Representatives of the States General (purchase 1839).
A special piece of national history in original binding.
