First illustrated edition bound in red percaline publisher’s cardboard with a bradel binding, featuring a polychrome front cover with a 'golden globe' of the second type. Spine at the lighthouse. Lower cover of Engel type 'h'. Gilt edges.
Edition containing 68 illustrations by Georges Roux, including 20 full-page chromotypography engravings: 14 in color, 4 in blue or gray, 2 in sepia. A map (page 88).
Bound following, the 'Y' catalog of 8 pages for 1897-1898.
Condition: light scratches and faded gilding in some areas on the top surface and back. Second plate in good condition. Spine ends and corners rubbed. Hinges solid. Two loose boards, sporadic foxing. Overall condition: fair.
This adventure novel takes place in the Southern Antarctic Lands, and on its icy waters where the ice pack and icebergs meet. Jules Verne was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's work, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, published in 1838, to write a sequel, which he dedicated to the famous American author.
