Description from the seller

Johannes WEILAND (Vlaardingen 1856 - The Hague 1909)

Children in the barn
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 48 x 70 cm
Signature: Signed by the artist lower right, dated 1878.

In very good condition

In its wide, gold-colored wooden frame: 60 x 80 cm

Dutch artist Johannes Weiland is predominantly known for rustic scenes depicting everyday rural life. New mothers look dotingly at babies in wicker baskets while old ladies buckle up and peel potatoes in sparse cottages. Every moment is subtly emphasized through light streaming through a ragged window.

Weiland was academy-trained and, like many of his generation, inspired by the old Dutch Masters. In his bold brushstrokes, we see the strength of Rembrandt combined with a masterful approach to light and shade. Proud of his heritage, the rich history of the Low Countries runs throughout his body of work.

His 'Interior with an old lady seated and cutting cloth,' which is in the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum London.
