The Great Wave off Kanagawa is the most famous work by Katsushika Hokusai, created between 1830 and 1832. This masterful print depicts a striking scene where a monumental wave, with foamy crests that seem about to crash into three fishing boats, rises against Mount Fuji, which stands serenely in the horizon. Here, the Japanese artist displays all his creative genius, using the famous Prussian blue, a pigment recently imported from Europe at the time, to create subtle gradations that give the composition its characteristic depth. Hokusai's exceptional technical mastery is revealed in every detail: the bubbling foam of the wave, the dramatic movement of the water, the precision of the boats and their crews, down to the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji standing out against a very serene sky.
