Description from the seller

[François de La Rochefoucauld]
Memoirs of M.D.L.R.
On the Brigues at the death of Louis XIII. The wars of Paris and Guyenne and the imprisonment of the princes. Apology for M. de Beaufort. Memoirs of M. de La Chastre. Articles agreed upon by His Royal Highness & Monsieur le Prince for the expulsion of Cardinal Mazarin. Letter from this Cardinal to Monsieur de Brienne.
In Cologne [Brussels], at Pierre van Dyck [François Foppens], 1662

In-12 of [2]ff., 400pp.
Ivory vellum, handwritten title 'Guerre de Paris' on the back (binding from the period).

Second original edition printed by François Foppens in Brussels, under the name of Pierre Van Dyck. Mark with the sphere on the title.
It is an 'exact reproduction of the first, but with the errors corrected, no errata.' The buffalo-headed crest of P.1 is upside down (see photo). On page 26, line 24, it reads Espargne instead of Esparne, which is on the first. Pages 237, 276, and 279 are numbered 137, 376, and 379. (Tchémerzine 4, 27.)

These memoirs concern the civil wars in France under Louis XIII. After taking the side of the noble revolt during the Fronde and engaging in several intrigues at the Court, La Rochefoucauld returns to Paris and regains the favor of the young King Louis XIV. He writes his Memoirs, which he publishes clandestinely, but faced with the scandal caused by his accounts, he is forced to disown his work.
After the Mémoires of Cardinal de Retz, which La Rochefoucauld himself had attempted to have murdered, these are the most important testimonies about the Fronde period. In the address to the reader by the bookseller, he specifies that he has added to the original text the Mémoires of Monsieur de La Chastre 'because they deal with almost the same matters'.

Two pages slightly browned, otherwise overall a very good example in vellum from the period.
Handwritten table by a contemporary reader opposite the title page.
