"Ute Mahler, born 1949, and Werner Mahler, born 1950, together since 40 years, were among the foremost photographers in East Germany during the Communist era and continue today to bring their humanistic view of the world to bear on various compelling photo projects. Following reunification, they co-founded the photographers' agency 'Ostkreuz' and the Ostkreuzschule school for photography in Berlin. The Mahlers live and work in Hamburg and Berlin. Ute Mahler is a professor of photography at the HAW University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. Their first joint exhibition features important series such as Berka, Die Abiturienten, Bergbau, and Der Verein by Werner Mahler and Zusammen Leben, Erotikprogramm in der DDR, Brüder und Schwestern, Bomber, and Ibrahim Böhme by Ute Mahler. Also on view are fashion shots by both Ute and Werner Mahler - for example, for the legendary magazine Sibylle. With 'Monalisen der Vorstädte' ('Monalisen of the Suburbs'), portraits of young women in five European cities, the two photographers are now presenting their first joint project."

Werner Mahler was born in 1950 in Bossdorf, Saxony-Anhalt. He began his photographic career in 1971 as assistant to Ludwig Schirmer. In 1978 he completed his studies in photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. In his works of the 1970s and 1980s, he vividly documented life in the GDR, for example everyday life in a Thuringian village, work in a coal mine near Zwickau or the politically charged derbies between the football clubs FC Union and BFC Dynamo. After the fall of communism, Werner Mahler co-founded the agency 'Ostkreuz', of which he is still the managing director today. In 2005 he founded the 'Ostkreuzschule' for photography together with Thomas Sandberg. In his more recent works, he often uses historical cameras. With the camera obscura, he created dreamlike sequences of Swiss lakes, Brandenburg landscapes or Leonardi da Vinci's workplaces in northern Italy. Together with his wife Ute Mahler, he used an old plate camera to photograph girls in transition, between city and country, childhood and maturity.
